The Korean Film Archive has announced a retrospective of all works by director Hong Sang-soo.
The Korean Film Archive said it will hold a special exhibition spotlighting director Hong Sang-soo’s debut 30th anniversary, titled “Hong Sang-soo: A Retrospective of All Works—Introduction,” at the KOFA Cinematheque in Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, from Saturday, May 2, through Saturday, June 13.
This exhibition will take a look in one place at all 34 of Hong Sang-soo’s films—from his 1996 debut, 〈The Day a Pig Fell into the Well〉, to his 34th feature film, 〈The Woman Who Came Back〉, scheduled for release on May 6, 2026. Each film will be screened a total of two times, with the director’s unique aesthetic of “variations” also applied to the screening format. The first screening of each title will be shown at Theater 1 of the KOFA Cinematheque in order of production year, from the debut 〈The Day a Pig Fell into the Well〉 to the newest 〈The Woman Who Came Back〉. By contrast, the second screening will be arranged in reverse order, starting from the latest work and moving backward to the debut, so that viewers can experience the same world of films in an entirely different form.
In addition, a variety of supporting events will be prepared to explore his film world even more three-dimensionally during the exhibition period. After the screening of his debut 〈The Day a Pig Fell into the Well〉, a discussion will be held featuring Haden Guest, Director of the Harvard Film Archive, and director Kim Hong-jun. There will also be a cinematography master class featuring cinematographer Park Hong-yeol, who worked with director Hong Sang-soo on ten films (including 〈Hahaha〉 and 〈Night on the Beach Alone〉, etc.), as well as a range of events such as a conversation with the audience (GV) with actress Song Sun-mi and actress Park Mi-so, and film critic Namda-eun, who appeared in his 34th feature, 〈The Woman Who Came Back〉. Deep and substantive lectures and discussions featuring a number of well-known film critics and writers are also expected to be held throughout the exhibition period. For detailed screening schedules, visit the Korean Film Archive website (www.koreafilm.or.kr), and admission is free.
