[First Look on the Scene]
Fueled by the absolute support of horror fans around the world, the film 〈The Mummy by Lee Cronin〉—which brings together horror maestro James Wan and Blumhouse, a pairing that has everyone excited—opens on April 22. 〈The Mummy by Lee Cronin〉 is a story about a young daughter who vanished without a trace from the yard of her home, only to return after eight years in the form of a mummy, forcing her family to confront an ancient curse. Here, Cineplay’s editorial director Ju Seong-cheol shares his impressions after watching the film.
Ju Seong-cheol / ★★★☆ / Blumhouse’s insane might that even resurrects the long-dead 〈Mummy〉 series
Brendan Fraser’s 〈Mummy〉 (1999) and 〈Mummy II〉 (2001), and then—eventually—〈Mummy 3: Tomb of the Emperor〉 (2008), which even pulled in Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh, and finally 〈Mummy〉 (2017), the reboot starring Tom Cruise. Up to that point, 〈Mummy〉 was just the go-to name for a run-of-the-mill “entertainment blockbuster.” But when the next-generation horror auteur, Lee Cronin, teams up with Blumhouse, and adds inspiration from 〈The Exorcist〉 (1973) and then goes one more step to 〈Hereditary〉 (2018), they deliver a full-on showcase of true-school B-movie horror where you can’t look away for even a second. Still, the level of hard gore is high, so for some it’ll feel like heaven, while for others it will be the opposite.
