[First Reactions]
First released in 2006 and long-loved as the bible of fashion films, 〈The Devil Wears Prada〉's sequel 〈The Devil Wears Prada 2〉 opens in Korea today ahead of the rest of the world. 〈The Devil Wears Prada 2〉 tells the story of legendary fashion magazine Runway's editor-in-chief Miranda and Andy, who returns as a features editor after 20 years, reuniting with Emily, who has become an executive at a luxury brand, as they stake their entire careers to seize control of the fashion world once again in a media landscape that has completely changed. Here are Cineplay reporters' impressions after attending the press screening.
Kim Ji-yeon / ★★★ / Visually enjoyable, but the devil we were expecting feels bland
I had hoped for a sequel that would explore what has changed over 20 years and what has, despite everything, remained the same, but the way the story unfolds is disappointing. What we wanted was a glimpse into how and why Miranda and Andy changed and matured over those two decades, but many scenes function merely as devices for visual pleasure, which dilutes the characters' personal anguish and growth.
Seong Chan-eol / ★★★ / I was really into it, and then suddenly—here comes Milan
It's exactly like catching up warmly with a friend you haven't seen in years and then having them suddenly start bragging about their wealth... That's the exact feeling. I like how the film reestablishes the power dynamic between Andy and Miranda and portrays the ensemble of legacy media struggling in a changed world. But then it suddenly pours out a frenzied stream of fashion shows and celebrity parties and wraps things up sloppily. It does tie up Andy's and the surrounding characters' stories well (Nigel— is he some kind of god?), but I wonder how it would have felt if it were more compact.
