Jury President ‘Carla Simón’: “Short films are the essence of cinema and a space for experimentation”

This year, the jury president’s role is being filled by the acclaimed screenwriter and director Carla Simón, who is originally from Spain. She said, “A short film is an entire universe. In just a few minutes, it can leave an everlasting afterimage.” She went on to praise the artistic value of short films. She added, “Short films, freely created through artistic challenges, awaken the essence of cinema and the thrill of a first encounter. For those working on feature films as well, short films are an essential space for experimentation and renewal.” Concluding with heartfelt remarks, she said, “I’m deeply grateful for the chance to discover new voices. Returning to Cannes is always an adventure, a dream—and a privilege.”

Korean-Descent French Actor ‘Park Ji-Min’ Joins, Marking a Brilliant Global Path

The jury panel has also drawn significant attention by adding Park Ji-Min, a Korean-descent French actor and visual artist. Born into a family of Korean artists and having moved to France at the age of nine, he has devoted himself to visual arts while studying at ENSAD (École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs) in Paris. Making a powerful debut in the film world with Return to Seoul (2022) by director Dayi Xu, he was invited to Cannes in the Noteworthy Views category for the work and earned the honor of being nominated for the César Award for Most Promising Actress.

He later appeared in the 2024 series La Maison, and the following year he consecutively took part in three Cannes Film Festival invites, further solidifying his standing—appearing in The Little Sister directed by Hafsia Herzi, Love Me Tender directed by Anna Kaznabr Khambe, and A Private Life directed by Rebecca Zlotowski. He will also meet audiences around the world once again this year through director Christophe Honoré’s new work, Orange Flavored Wedding, which is screening in the Cannes Premiere section.
