A24’s Next Modern War Film, “Warfare,” Confirmed for August 19 Release and Teaser Poster Unveiled!

“Warfare,” where the overwhelming immediacy of “Black Hawk Down” meets the chilling directorial touch of “Civil War: The Age of Division,” opens on August 19.

The film “Warfare” is a real-time military survival action movie that depicts a fight to the death that begins when a Navy SEAL team, which takes over a house deep inside enemy territory to shield U.S. troop movement routes right after the Battle of Ramadi on November 19, 2006 in Iraq, is unexpectedly cut off.

Alex Garland, the genius artist behind the novel [Beach]—which was adapted into a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio—served as both writer and director. Garland is the director of “Civil War: The Age of Division,” “Ex Machina,” “Southern Reach: Land of Extinction,” and “Dredd,” and he also wrote the screenplays for “28 Days Later,” “Sunshine,” and “Never Let Me Go.” Joining him as co-writer and co-director is Ray Mendoza, who was on the scene during the actual Battle of Ramadi as a veteran of the Iraq war, bringing the peak of hyperrealism to the screen.

The buzz is especially intense because “Warfare” is the work that made director Alex Garland reverse his own earlier retirement declaration from directing after making “Civil War: The Age of Division,” saying, “This story has to be told,” and picking up the megaphone again. Garland and Mendoza have also fully excluded any artificially heightened cinematic exaggeration, instead adopting a real-time unfolding approach that lets viewers experience the flow of time exactly as the real soldiers on screen do. Through that method, viewers feel as if they have been thrown into the heart of Iraq, where the chaos of a barrage of gunfights mixes with the waiting, the terror, and the electrifying on-site immediacy—rather than sitting in a safe theater seat.

Just as much as “Warfare” delivers a sense of realism, the casting lineup also sets film fans’ hearts racing, with the rising stars expected to lead Hollywood showing up in full force. The lineup includes Joseph Quinn of “Stranger Things,” Charles Melton, who proved his acting chops in “May December,” Will Poulter of “Guardians of the Galaxy 3,” Kit Connor of “Heartstopper,” and other next-generation stars in their 20s who will excite audiences—who willingly shaved their heads and jumped into the battlefield. For realistic depictions, they enrolled in a real Navy SEAL training facility, endured three weeks of punishing training, and forged comradeship. Among them, a unique synergy comes from actor Dipharo Uunatai directly playing Ray Mendoza’s younger self, co-directing—pushing the film’s immersion even higher.

Hot praise from overseas media and critics (including Rotten Tomatoes at 92%, IMDb at 7.3, Metacritic at 78 points, and more) proves that “Warfare” is not a movie that merely flexes spectacle. During the operation, the film offers tributes to real-life figures such as Elliot Miller (Cosmo Jarvis), who was killed in action or wounded, and focuses on “memories of people” left behind at the battlefield and the deep fear felt by each individual soldier—earning high marks from viewers as well.

The teaser poster for the film “Warfare,” released alongside the confirmation of its debut, overwhelms viewers at once by closing in on a soldier’s tightly pressed lips caked with mud and blood, and on bloodshot eyes sharpened beyond the goggles. Along with the weighty copy that reads “True story from the Battle of Ramadi, A24’s next modern war,” Rotten Tomatoes fresh score of 92% and Popcorn score of 93% signal the birth of a new war masterpiece.
