After being founded in 2008 and opening up new ground for 3D animation in South Korea, 'Retrobot' is finally disappearing from the annals of history. It could not weather the hurdles of a weak slate of new releases in 2021 and years of worsening management difficulties, and ended up entering bankruptcy. This is not just the collapse of an individual company—it starkly reflects the harsh reality facing South Korea's animation industry as it confronts a freeze in investment.
New-release failure and the investment dry spell sink a 16-year powerhouse
'Retrobot''s 'LeeDal' CEO filed for bankruptcy with the Seoul Rehabilitation Court on June 17 through official channels, and then said the final bankruptcy ruling was issued on July 9. The start of that painful misstep was the commercial failure of 'PotenDog', which was unveiled with great ambition in 2021. On top of that, the company was dealt a fatal blow when a large animation production outsourcing project it won in 2023 was also halted. Afterward, it sought a new breakthrough, but it reached the cold conclusion that keeping the business alive was impossible amid rapidly changing media conditions and severe investment drought.
The situation reflects a structural crisis in South Korea's animation ecosystem. In a media interview, 'LeeDal' said, "With platform diversification and a sudden shift in the media environment, original new titles lost their place to stand, and with capital inflow cut off, multiple production companies have been facing a chain reaction of collapse." 4
The 'Tobot' flame survives... carried on by an IP-dedicated corporation
While the marquee of production company 'Retrobot' comes down, the legacy of its mega-hit 'Transforming Car Tobot' endures. That is because 'Retrobot CI', a separate corporation excluded from the bankruptcy proceedings, has taken over the baton for the intellectual property (IP) business. The corporation was established with the goal of planning 'Tobot: Heroes of the City of Tomorrow' and securing IP equity, so it is expected to become a key engine leading new narratives and IP expansion going forward.
'Retrobot', which left big footprints such as 'Transforming Car Tobot' created in 2010 with partners including 'Young Toys' and 'Kia Motors', as well as 'Bikyclones'. Though its journey as a production studio is now concluded, attention is on what kind of new vitality their spirit will bring in the harsh domestic market through 'Retrobot CI'.
