A Japan-based group ‘JO1’’s first standalone concert in Korea has been canceled on the spot. The ripple effects of the ‘ballot booth blockade’ protest—continuing for a long time near a handball arena close to Olympic Park in Songpa District, Seoul—have now spread into massive damage across the wider music industry.

Lapone Entertainment, the agency, confirmed the cancellation of the Seoul shows scheduled for the 26th and 27th of next month through its official channels on the 3rd. The agency said, “After a comprehensive review of the situation around the venue and the overall operational requirements, we concluded that a normal concert cannot be carried out.” The company explored multiple alternatives, including changing venues, to secure safety, but the plans ultimately fell through.

‘JO1’ is a Japan-localized idol group planned by CJ ENM, and the stage was set to become a meaningful exchange with Korean fans. But due to external factors that it could not control, fans were left with the disappointment of a long wait.

The root cause of the incident is the ‘ballot booth blockade’ protest that has taken over the area around the handball arena. The demonstration, which began with the pretext of a ballot paper shortage that surfaced during the nationwide local elections held on June 3, has continued without any clear end in sight, triggering confusion across the area.

The damage to the pop-culture world has already crossed a critical threshold. Earlier, the singer ‘Park Seojin’’s concert—scheduled for earlier last month—was fully canceled. In addition, the group TVXQ’s ‘Yunho’ and the band ‘N.Flying’ were forced to urgently change the venue to Jamsil Indoor Gymnasium and take the stage. Given the reality of Korea’s domestic concert industry, where venue-booking difficulties are severe, critics say that the long-running protests by a specific group are even threatening the ecosystem of the culture and arts sector.
