Middle-aged fans return to K-pop, driving an extraordinary trend across North America
The global K-pop festival KCON LA 2026 set an unprecedented attendance record, creating a new cultural phenomenon. CJ ENM said on the 24th that the number of views for the event's free and paid content streamed through its global fan platform, Mnet Plus, doubled from a year earlier. Held in Los Angeles from the 14th to the 16th, the three-day festival went beyond a series of concerts to demonstrate K-culture's global reach.
The most notable development was the structural shift in the audience. An analysis of users by age found that the share of teenagers rose 1.9-fold compared with the platformwide average, while the number of users in their 40s and older surged threefold. The trend challenges the notion that idol fandom belongs exclusively to a particular generation and suggests that K-pop has become a megatrend spanning generations.
The global figures were equally striking. Women accounted for 85% of all viewers, demonstrating the strength and cohesion of the festival's core fandom. Viewers also logged in from across the world, led by the United States, where the festival was held, as well as South Korea, China, Japan and Indonesia, reaffirming the stature of global K-pop.
