Idol concert tickets snapped up at 80 per minute; scalper jailed after charging up to 2.73 million won, living lavishly

Security systems at major ticketing sites in South Korea were no match for the calculated crimes of a man in his 30s. The scalper, who used a self-developed "macro" program to buy up tickets to popular idol concerts and amass a fortune, has finally been jailed. Behind the abnormal race to collect as many as 80 tickets in just one minute was a meticulously calculated criminal algorithm.

The Cybercrime Investigation Unit of the Ulsan Metropolitan Police Agency said on the 26th that it had arrested and referred to prosecutors a 35-year-old man, identified by his surname initial A, on charges of obstructing business and violating the Performance Act and the Information and Communications Network Act. The case laid bare an organized and sophisticated cybercrime operation that went far beyond simple ticket reselling.

More than 1,000 foreign-held accounts and an automated system fuel a cyber black market

Police said A operated for more than a year across three major domestic ticketing sites. At the heart of the scheme were 1,198 accounts held in foreigners' names, which he bought through "Telegram" for 30,000 won each. Drawing on IT knowledge he acquired while working in e-commerce, he abused that expertise to design a dedicated "macro" that completely bypassed even "CAPTCHA", the ticketing sites' anti-fraud measure. The program could also automatically post listings on secondhand trading platforms at intervals of seconds, creating an illegal ecosystem that bought and sold 70 to 80 tickets in just one minute.

Scalper charged up to 13 times face value; 200 million won in cash seized from safe

A distributed more than 1,700 scalped tickets using this method. He marked them up at least threefold and by as much as 13 times their face value, selling them for as much as 2.73 million won apiece. His net profit totaled more than 420 million won. When he was arrested, his home in Seoul was a lavish fortress built on criminal proceeds. Police found piles of luxury watches, jewelry and high-priced limited-edition shoes throughout the house, while an imported sports car sat in the garage.

Police immediately seized roughly 200 million won in cash stored in a safe at the site and applied for preindictment preservation of seizure covering the full 420 million won in identified "criminal proceeds". The move underscored investigators' determination to cut off the illegal financial gains at their source.

The case does not end there. Police discovered signs that A repeatedly transferred money to a specific individual while purchasing large numbers of foreign-held accounts through "Telegram". They are expanding the investigation to determine whether higher-ups or accomplices were involved. Police also confirmed that the "macro" used in the scheme automated the process all the way through credit card payment and formally asked the relevant card companies to address critical vulnerabilities in their payment-approval procedures.
