Games are establishing themselves as a new form of social connection beyond simple entertainment. According to a recent survey released by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), 8 out of 10 American gamers (78%) reported that they are forming deeper relationships with friends they met through gaming.
Notably, there is a growing number of people who feel that their relationships with online gaming friends are as meaningful as, and sometimes even more so than, their offline friendships. Among the gamers surveyed, 65% responded that they share their lives with each other through everyday conversations with their gaming friends.
The main platforms driving this change are Discord and Twitch. Discord currently has 150 million monthly active users in the U.S. alone, where gamers communicate in real-time through voice chat while enjoying games.
On Twitch, real-time interaction between streamers and viewers is vibrant. On average, viewers communicate with streamers through chat for 3.5 hours a day, which is a much more active and engaging experience compared to traditional TV viewing.
Social features have also significantly advanced within games. In 'Roblox', users can create games and share them with friends, while in 'Minecraft', collaborative projects where players from around the world work together to build massive structures are thriving.
26-year-old gamer Jessica Williams stated, 'Thanks to my gaming friends during the COVID-19 period, I was able to overcome loneliness,' adding, 'I am really grateful to have friends who share their daily lives while playing the same game every night.'
Psychologist Dr. Michael Lee analyzed, 'The relationships formed through gaming create very strong bonds because they share common goals and experiences,' and noted, 'Especially in games where teamwork is crucial, trust and reliance on each other increase, leading to deep friendships.'
Game companies are also enhancing social features in line with this trend. EA has decided to integrate 'in-game voice chat' as a standard feature in all games, while Ubisoft has introduced a 'friend recommendation system' that automatically connects gamers with similar play styles.
Meanwhile, there are increasing cases where relationships formed through gaming lead to real-life connections. According to a survey by the gaming community 'Gaming Together', it was reported that 2,847 couples who met in online games actually got married in 2024.
Experts predict that 'games are no longer just a pastime but are becoming an important socialization tool for modern individuals,' and that 'the importance of social features in the gaming industry will continue to grow.'
