Director Park Chan-wook's latest work 'Nothing Can Be Done' has been selected as Korea's representative for the International Feature Film category at next year's Academy Awards. The Korean Film Council announced the results of the evaluation on the 3rd, stating that this work has the highest competitiveness among the submissions.
The judging committee stated, "We comprehensively considered the stable cinematic completeness, the handling of the social issue of dismissal, the outstanding acting skills of the actors, and the collaboration with a trusted distributor in North America," and evaluated that "the irony of presenting a tragedy that global audiences can empathize with through humor will receive a good response at the Academy."
In the International Feature Film category, each country can submit only one film produced outside the United States. This year, the representative work from Korea was 'Spring in Seoul'.
'Nothing Can Be Done' depicts the struggles of the dismissed head of the family, Man-soo (played by Lee Byung-hun), as he fights to find reemployment. The original work is based on Donald Westlake's novel 'The Ax'.
This work was invited to the competition section of the 82nd Venice Film Festival and was premiered for the first time on the 29th of last month. It has received positive reviews from major overseas media, and there are predictions that it will be nominated in major categories at next year's Academy Awards.
