Dwayne Johnson (53), a Hollywood actor and former professional wrestler, is receiving positive reviews for his serious acting transformation in a new film, as reported by U.S. media including The New York Times on the 3rd (local time).

In the recently released film 'The Smashing Machine', Johnson plays Mark Kerr, a drug-addicted UFC fighter, showcasing a restrained performance that is distinctly different from his usual action blockbuster image. He drew attention at the Venice International Film Festival red carpet event on the 1st, appearing unrecognizably thin.

'The Smashing Machine' is a drama that realistically depicts the process of Mark Kerr, an early UFC fighter, becoming increasingly dependent on narcotic painkillers as he prepares to return to the ring. Johnson left a deep impression with subtle expressions, such as forced smiles amidst pain.

After the film was first screened at the Venice Film Festival, Johnson and the main cast and director received about 15 minutes of standing ovation. It is reported that Johnson was moved to tears. The New York Times commented on "Dwayne Johnson's tearful transformation," stating that he proved he could perform beyond just explosive scenes or glaring at co-star Vin Diesel.

Critics predict that this performance could open up the possibility of Johnson's first Oscar nomination for acting. At the film festival press conference, Johnson expressed his determination to continue seeking roles that expand his acting range, rather than settling for box office hits. He stated, "Box office results can pigeonhole an actor," adding, "There was a desperate desire and voice within me that there is more I can do."

Johnson also mentioned, "I found it hard to know what I could do, trapped in a fixed image," and added, "The people I love and respect need to tell me, 'You can do it.'"
