[Korean Box Office] Director Yeon Sang-ho's 'The Ugly' Stops 'Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba Infinity Castle Arc' from 20 Days of Consecutive No. 1

Director Yeon Sang-ho's new film 〈The Ugly〉 debuted at No. 1 in the domestic box office on its opening day, stopping the 20-day consecutive No. 1 streak of the Japanese animation 〈Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba Infinity Castle Arc〉.

According to the integrated ticket sales network on the 12th, 〈The Ugly〉, starring Park Jung-min, attracted over 35,000 viewers on its opening day, achieving a revenue share of 22.6% and securing the top spot at the box office.

Since its release on the 22nd of last month, 〈Infinity Castle Arc〉 had maintained the No. 1 position, but with over 33,000 viewers and a revenue share of 24.1%, it was pushed down to No. 2 for the first time. The cumulative audience for this film has reached over 4.13 million.

Based on the webtoon of the same name by Yeon Sang-ho, 〈The Ugly〉 tells the story of Im Dong-hwan, the son of a seal engraver, Lim Young-kyu, who is blind and investigates the secrets surrounding his mother's death. Park Jung-min plays both the young Lim Young-kyu and his son Im Dong-hwan, with Kwon Hae-hyo, Shin Hyun-bin, Lim Sung-jae, and Han Ji-hyun also appearing.

Notably, this film was produced as a low-budget project with a production cost of around 200 million won. It is reported that filming was completed over three weeks with a small crew of about 20 people.

The third spot at the box office went to the thriller 〈MURDER REPORT〉, starring Jo Yeo-jeong and Jung Sung-il, which was released on the 5th. This film attracted over 13,000 viewers, achieving a revenue share of 8.8%.

Meanwhile, as of 9 AM that day, the top pre-booking film is 〈NO OTHER CHOICE〉, directed by Park Chan-wook, which is set to be released on the 24th. It has been pre-booked by over 181,000 people, showing a pre-booking rate of 30.3%. The second place in pre-booking is 〈Infinity Castle Arc〉 (over 130,000 people, 21.9%), and the third is 〈The Ugly〉 (over 44,000 people, 7.4%).
