Director Lee Hwan's film 〈Project Y〉 achieved a remarkable feat by winning the Best Film Award in the competition section at the 10th London Asian Film Festival (LEAFF).
Starring Han So-hee and Jeon Jong-seo, 〈Project Y〉 is a noir film that depicts the story of two women trying to escape their bottom-of-the-barrel lives by stealing money and gold bars.
The award announced at the closing ceremony of the film festival held in London on the 2nd was highly praised for breaking the traditional noir genre framework by centering the narrative around women's perspectives, exploring desire, tension, and moral ambiguity through female agency. The jury praised it for presenting new possibilities for Asian cinema.
Meanwhile, Director Kang Yoon-sung's 〈Run to the West〉 was selected as the opening film for the 'Artificial Intelligence (AI) Section' and received the honor of the 'Future of Asia Cinema Award'(Future of Asia Cinema Award). The closing film, Director Lee Sang-il's 〈KOKUHO〉, was screened and recorded a full house of 800 seats, receiving great attention.
Jeon Hye-jung, the executive director of the London Asian Film Festival, stated, "The London Asian Film Festival, which started as a small attempt 10 years ago, has grown into a representative Asian film festival in the UK," and added, "The experimental nature and diversity shown by this year's works make us look forward to the next 10 years even more."
