Amazon MGM Studios officially announced on November 19 (local time) the production of a new TV series based on the legendary sci-fi franchise 'Stargate'. This work, which is set to air on Prime Video, is generating excitement among fans worldwide as it marks the first regular series in 14 years since the conclusion of 'Stargate Universe' in 2011.
Return of Franchise Veteran Martin Gero
The showrunner for the new series will be Martin Gero. Gero began his career as a story editor on 'Stargate: Atlantis' 20 years ago and is a veteran creator who has worked on all three series of the Stargate franchise for five years.
In a statement, Gero expressed, "Stargate is etched in my DNA" and stated that it will be a work for both long-time fans and new viewers. He emphasized that this series will not be a reboot, but rather a completely new chapter within the existing Stargate universe.
Original Production Team in Full Force
This project features a powerful production team. Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, who co-wrote the original film in 1994, will serve as executive producers to strengthen the identity of the series. Additionally, Jovi Harold and Tori Tunnell will also take on the role of executive producers through Safehouse Pictures.
In particular, Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi, who were long-time creative leaders of the Stargate TV universe, will join as consulting producers to help carry on the franchise's rich legacy.
Nick Pepper, head of U.S. SVOD TV development at Amazon MGM Studios, stated, "It is an honor to open a new chapter of this iconic franchise that has captivated audiences for decades," and expressed expectations that they will "depict an ambitious and emotional future while respecting the rich legacy."
The Stargate franchise, since the 1994 film, has produced a massive sci-fi legacy with a total of 17 seasons and over 350 episodes, including 'Stargate SG-1' (10 seasons), 'Stargate Atlantis' (5 seasons), and 'Stargate Universe' (2 seasons).
