Actor Eric Dane, known for his role as McSteamy in Grey's Anatomy, is actively participating in campaigns to fight the disease while continuing his acting career despite battling ALS. The 52-year-old actor first revealed his diagnosis of ALS in April 2025.
$1 Billion Research Fundraising 'Push for Progress' Launched
On November 24, Dane announced a partnership with the nonprofit organization I AM ALS to launch the 'Push for Progress' campaign. This campaign aims to raise $1 billion for research over the next three years.
Dane declared, "ALS has been considered an incurable disease for over a century. We will not accept the current state" and expressed a strong commitment to fighting the disease. He also stated, "As an actor and a father, I now live as an ALS patient. I want to see my two daughters graduate from college and get married."
He shared that the muscle weakness that started in his right hand has now spread to his entire right arm, and he is concerned that his left hand will be affected in the coming months.
Efforts for Federal Bill Reauthorization
Dane visited Washington DC in September to meet with California Congressman Eric Swalwell to discuss the federal bill extension for ALS research support. The 'ACT for ALS' bill, enacted in 2021, is set to expire in 2026, and Dane is working hard for its reauthorization.
His battle with the disease is also affecting his acting career. The production team explained that they were only informed that he could not attend the 2025 Emmy Awards. However, Dane has completed filming for HBO's 'Euphoria' Season 3 with a promise that he will "keep going until the wheels fall off" and continues to act in Amazon Prime Video's 'Countdown' series.
