The Touching True Story of a 90-Year-Old Veteran
The film is based on a true story from the summer of 2014. It tells the story of 90-year-old World War II veteran Bernard Jordan (played by Michael Caine) who escapes from a nursing home to attend the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings at Normandy beach.
Glenda Jackson plays his wife Rene, portraying a devoted partner who encourages and supports her husband. Jackson passed away at the age of 87 in June 2023, and this film was completed after she finished filming in September 2022. Director Oliver Parker revealed that Jackson filmed almost all major scenes in the first 12 days of shooting.
Michael Caine's Retirement Film
Michael Caine also announced his retirement after this film in October 2023. At the age of 89, he stated, "I kept saying I would retire, but now I really am retiring. This film, in which I starred, received amazing reviews." He expressed, "It's better to leave with this level of achievement."
The film has received critical acclaim, recording a 90% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The Guardian praised it as "much stronger and more moving than expected," and commended that "Michael Caine and the late Glenda Jackson delivered their best performances."
Caine and Jackson reunited after 48 years since they acted together in 'A Romantic Englishwoman' in 1975. Caine recalled Jackson as "one of the greatest film actresses of our time," expressing deep respect for being part of her final work.
