President Donald Trump is facing severe backlash for mocking Hollywood giant Rob Reiner instead of mourning him, who tragically lost his life to a horrific homicide.
According to U.S. political media such as The Hill and Politico on the 16th (local time), President Trump claimed the cause of director Rob Reiner's death was 'Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS)' through his social media platform, Truth Social, the day before.
◆ Blaming a Murder Case on 'Political Illness'?
In his post, Trump stated, "A very sad thing happened in Hollywood last night," yet claimed, "Rob Reiner is said to have died due to anger caused by a disease known as 'Trump Derangement Syndrome'".
This is a blatant falsehood and a desecration of the deceased. The LA police had already announced that Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle were stabbed to death, and their son Nick Reiner was arrested as a prime suspect in the murder. Trump has labeled the victim of a tragic murder as someone who 'died in anger' simply for criticizing him during his lifetime.

◆ Deep-rooted Bad Blood
In his lifetime, Rob Reiner was a major donor to the Democratic Party and a critic of Trump. In a 2024 interview with The Guardian, he harshly criticized Trump as a "criminal" and "a person whose every moment in life is a lie," and has constantly warned that if Trump comes to power, America will become a dictatorship. Trump has used Reiner's death to show his vindictiveness.
◆ Even Within the Republican Party, "He Crossed the Line"
Criticism of the President's inappropriate remarks has emerged even within the ruling Republican Party. Mike Lawler, a Republican Congressman from New York, indirectly pointed out that "no one should be exposed to such violence, regardless of political views," urging not to obscure the essence of the incident.
Senator John Kennedy (Republican, Kentucky) more directly stated, "The President should have said nothing", criticizing that the President broke the American tradition of pausing political disputes in the face of tragic deaths.
Meanwhile, police are focusing their investigation on the drug abuse issues and motives of the arrested son, Nick Reiner. The final journey of the giant who left behind 'When Harry Met Sally' is further stained by the President's outrageous remarks.
