Every December, the owner of the husky voice that echoed through radios and streets worldwide, British singer-songwriter Chris Rea, closed his eyes just before Christmas. He was 74 years old.

According to foreign media such as The Guardian and BBC on the 23rd (local time), Chris Rea's family spokesperson officially announced that he passed away on Monday, December 22, after a short illness.

◆ "His Songs Are the Soundtrack of Our Lives"

The family expressed their sorrow in a statement, saying, "We are very sad to announce the death of our beloved Chris. His music has been the soundtrack of many people's lives, and his legacy will continue through the songs he left behind." On December 22, the peak of the Christmas season, music fans could not hide their grief at the news of his passing to 'Home' in heaven, just like the title of his signature song, calling it "the saddest Christmas news."

◆ The Miracle of the B-Side Becomes an Immortal Carol

Born in 1951, Chris Rea left behind classic songs based on blues rock, such as 'Fool (If You Think It's Over)' and 'Let's Dance'. However, what made him a legend was undoubtedly 'Driving Home for Christmas'. This song, which first came out as a B-side track of the 1986 single 'Hello Friend', created a resurgence myth through its re-release in 1988. Without flashy techniques, this song, which sings about the excitement of heading home, has maintained its place on the UK charts for over 30 years, becoming a must-have Christmas song alongside Mariah Carey's carols.

◆ Music Preserved While Battling Illness

His life was a continuous battle with illness. Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at the young age of 33, he endured major surgery and suffered a stroke in 2016. However, he did not let go of his music, releasing albums until 2019 while fighting against illness. In a June 2024 interview, he revealed his philosophy of pursuing musical essence over fame, stating, "My heroes were not flashy rock stars. They were truly important musicians."
