The Grammy-nominated producer John Forté, who helped create the legendary 90s hip-hop group Fugees’ iconic album 'The Score', has passed away at the age of 50.
According to local police and foreign media on the 14th (Korean time), Forté was found dead at his home in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, USA on the 13th.
◆ Cause of death unknown, health issues reported
The Chilmark Police Department stated, "No signs of homicide or suspicious circumstances were found at the scene." An investigation by the coroner is underway to determine the exact cause of death. According to family representatives, Forté had shown signs of seizures and had been hospitalized for treatment about a year ago, and it is reported that he had been taking anticonvulsants, raising the possibility that health deterioration may have contributed to his death.
◆ From hip-hop legend to prison life, and then a comeback
Forté connected with the Fugees members through Lauryn Hill. He participated in the Fugees' album 'The Score', released in 1996 and a worldwide hit, featuring and co-writing tracks like 'Family Business' and 'Cowboys'. His contribution to the album winning the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album propelled him to fame in the hip-hop scene.
However, in 2000, he fell from grace when he was arrested at Newark Airport for transporting liquid cocaine and sentenced to 14 years in prison. Despite this, he maintained his connection to music while in prison, releasing the album 'I John' and showing a desire for rehabilitation. Thanks to a campaign for his release led by singer Carly Simon and others, he was released in 2008 due to a commutation by President George W. Bush after seven years.
Afterward, John Forté lived a second life as a social activist and musician. The hip-hop community is mourning his untimely passing.
