The eternal 'McSteamy' of 'Grey's Anatomy', actor Eric Dane (53) is documenting his life while fighting the toughest battle of his life. His determination to continue acting and writing, even in a situation where he requires 24-hour care due to ALS, resonates deeply.
Eric Dane will publish his memoir 'Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments' in 2026.
◆ "Every morning, I realize this is reality"
Dane was diagnosed with ALS in April 2025. This disease is a fatal condition that destroys motor neurons, gradually leading to the loss of the ability to move, speak, and breathe. He stated in a press release, "Every morning when I wake up, I am immediately reminded that this disease and the challenges are real. That’s why I am writing this book," revealing his motivation for writing. The book is expected to cover his journey from the glamorous days of 'Grey's Anatomy' to the birth of his two daughters, and the moment the cruel disease struck.
◆ Passion for Acting Blossoms Even Under 24-Hour Care
His health condition is reported to be more serious than expected. His ex-wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, shared in a media contribution last month that "Eric is currently receiving help from a 24-hour nurse, and the week is divided into 21 shifts". The surprising thing is that despite these adverse conditions, he has not given up on acting. Dane will return as 'Cal Jacobs' in the upcoming HBO 'Euphoria' Season 3 set to premiere in April. He will also guest star as an ALS patient in NBC's 'Brilliant Minds', transforming his real pain into acting.
◆ "My life is no longer just my own"
At a panel event last month, Dane expressed a strong will to live, saying, "Even if I spend two weeks crying under the covers, no one would blame me, but I feel it’s essential to share my journey." Maria Shriver, who is overseeing the publication, stated, "This book will be a proud legacy he leaves for his daughters and a guide for the public on how to be true companions to ALS patients."
