Established as a new classic in Japanese romance films, 〈Even If This Love Disappears from the World Tonight〉 (hereafter ‘Oseisa’) is once again painting the theaters pink with its re-release. Since its re-release on January 28, it has attracted an additional 30,000 viewers in just 6 days, surpassing a cumulative audience of 1.25 million as of February 3.
〈Oseisa〉 depicts the poignant romance between a girl, Maori (played by Riko Fukumoto), who suffers from ‘anterograde amnesia’ where her memory resets every time she wakes up, and a boy, Toru (played by Shunsuke Michieda), who devotes his pure love to her. Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Misaki Ichijo, this work caused the ‘Oseisa Syndrome’ during its initial release in 2022, running for three months with long-term success.
Top Seat Sales… Explosive Popularity Riding on Merchandise and Remake Trends
The re-release started off with a bang. On its opening day, it recorded a seat sales rate of 30.2%, ranking first in the independent and art film box office, as well as overall seat sales. Particularly, marketing strategies that targeted audience preferences, such as the original novel poster giveaway event featuring the cover visuals of the original novel and the screening event giving away ‘Dubai Chewy Cookies’ that became a hot topic on social media, were deemed effective.
Additionally, the buzz surrounding the recently released Korean remake film has sparked nostalgia for the original, igniting a ‘Japanese version revival’ trend. Fans are passionately supporting online, saying, “The male lead of Oseisa has to be Michi (Shunsuke Michieda),” and “The remake is good, but the original is on another level of emotion.” A video message from director Hiroshi Miki also further stimulated fans' desire to watch.
Directed by Hiroshi Miki X Theme Song by Yorushika… The Quintessential ‘Emotional Romance’
Behind the success of the re-release lies the synergy of a solid production team and cast. The delicate direction of master of emotional romance Hiroshi Miki, the screenplay by Shoko Tsukikawa, director of 〈I Want to Eat Your Pancreas〉, and the theme song 'Zuaumeng' by 'Yorushika', which has a strong domestic fandom, combined to create a unique atmosphere.
The story of two boys and girls who do not stop confessing their love for each other despite the harsh fate of love disappearing every night, 〈Even If This Love Disappears from the World Tonight〉 is currently being screened nationwide and is expected to continue its long-term success, once again stirring up tears this winter.
