The Netflix movie 〈K-Pop Demon Hunters〉has won the honor of Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song at the 98th Academy Awards, and the acceptance speech of EJAE, who participated in composing and performing the song 'Golden', is making headlines.
Upon receiving the award for Best Original Song, EJAE stated, “I was teased for liking K-Pop as a kid, but now everyone is singing our song in Korean. I believe this award is about the strength of perseverance rather than success. I am truly grateful,” expressing heartfelt emotions. The live performance of 'Golden' by EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami at the ceremony featured a grim reaper performance combined with traditional Korean instruments and pansori, coloring the Academy venue with the splendor of Korean culture.
In a backstage interview, EJAE expressed gratitude to Korean fans, saying, “I am so thankful to the fans in Korea. It is truly an honor, and I dedicate this song and movie to all of Korea. I am really grateful.” She added her feelings about performing on the Academy stage, saying, “I was really nervous, but it is an honor to perform on such a tremendous stage like the Academy. I am filled with gratitude. Especially as a Korean American woman, standing on this stage and experiencing our culture and traditions is truly amazing.”
EJAE also candidly revealed her feelings about her identity as a Korean. She said, “The introduction of the performance featured traditional Korean music, which I am particularly proud of. As a Korean American who grew up in the U.S., I sometimes wanted to hide my Korean identity for fear of being bullied because of food or culture. But now, I am truly proud of my Korean identity. Even during rehearsals, I was able to connect with our roots, and I am just so grateful.”
The 〈K-Pop Demon Hunters〉 has achieved two awards at the Academy Awards and is currently streaming on Netflix.
