'Hello Rookie,' revived after 4 years, foreshadowing a new legend in the indie scene

EBS’s flagship rookie discovery project 'Hello Rookie' has reopened the stage after a four-year hiatus. 'Nokinok' and 'Sanmanhansiseon', who cleared the fierce preliminary rounds and were selected as the stars of May, are ready to inject fresh energy into South Korea’s indie music scene.

A 952-to-1 competition rate, proven through skill: 'Nokinok' and 'Sanmanhansiseon'

EBS’s representative rookie musician discovery project 'Hello Rookie' has fully restarted after four years. As the stars of May announced for the project’s first run, the final selection went to the rock band 'Nokinok' and the folk duo 'Sanmanhansiseon', marking a remarkable achievement.

The preliminary stage held on the 23rd at Hyundai Card Understage in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, was more intense than ever. Among a total of 952 applicant teams, only 10 teams passed the first gate to take the stage and battle it out in an uncompromising live contest.

'Overwhelming stage command' and 'delicate sensibility,' as chosen by the judging panel

As a result of strict and fair evaluations by a panel of professional judges, the two teams earned the honors of May. The rock band 'Nokinok' delivered a powerful sense of immersion with dominating stage command rooted in intense, high-energy performances. Meanwhile, the folk duo 'Sanmanhansiseon' deeply stirred the judges’ sensibilities through a delicate narrative and outstanding song delivery, leading to near-unanimous praise.

Indie proving ground with 15 years of history—kicking off a grand journey toward the year-end award

First unveiled through 'EBS Space Gonggam' in 2007, 'Hello Rookie' is a well-established, top indie launchpad in Korea. Over the past 15 years, it has broadened the base of the mainstream music industry by producing no fewer than 173 teams of talented artists, including 'Guckkasten' and 'Jang Ki-ha and the Faces'.

On the other hand, the live judging for next month’s star, 'Hello Rookie of June', will be held on June 21. EBS selects two teams each month as 'Hello Rookie of the Month', and plans to finally confirm the eagerly anticipated year-end grand prize through the main and final stages held at the end of the year.
