The theater scene responded passionately to the return of a masterpiece after 20 years. The film “The Devil Wears Prada 2” topped the box office for its first weekend after release.

According to data from the Integrated Ticketing Network for movie theater admissions, “The Devil Wears Prada 2” drew about 195,000 viewers over the three-day weekend from the 8th to the 10th and secured the #1 spot. The current cumulative audience count stands at about 1.221 million. Released on the 29th of last month, the film is set against the backdrop of a New York fashion magazine, chronicling how “Andy” (played by Anne Hathaway) and editor “Miranda” (played by Meryl Streep) carve out their own paths amid a rapidly changing media environment. It has been met with overwhelming praise for perfectly recreating the nostalgia of the original.

“Salmonkji”’s Remarkable Box-Office Run Amid “Super Mario Galaxy”’s Pursuit

The #2 spot went to the animated film “Super Mario Galaxy”, which attracted about 184,000 viewers. Next, the horror film “Salmokji”, starring “Kim Hye-yoon”, drew about 147,000 people and earned the #3 position.

In particular, “Salmokji”’s box-office momentum is extremely fierce. After just a little over a month since its release, it surpassed 3 million cumulative admissions (3.022 million). This is a record that ranks as the #2 biggest box-office hit among all domestic horror films, following “Janghwa, Hongryeon” (3.14 million), which was released in 2003.

Meanwhile, the SF blockbuster “Project Hail Mary” came in at #4 with about 58,000 viewers, while “Jjanggu”, in which actor Jung Woo handled both starring and directing, debuted at #5 with about 31,000 viewers.

Pre-Sale Rate #1 “Michael,” Foreshadowing a Major Shift in Theater Rankings Ahead

A major reshuffling of the theater landscape is also expected ahead. The biographical film “Michael Jackson”, released on the 13th, is racing ahead at #1 with a pre-sale rate of 41.3% (about 64,000 pre-sale viewers) as of 9 a.m. on the 11th. Director Yeon Sang-ho’s new work “Goonche” climbed to #2 with a pre-sale rate of 12.0%, setting the stage for fierce competition.
