'Super Mario Galaxy' Draws Family Audiences, Overpowers Buzz Title 'The Devil Wears Prada 2'
According to figures released by the integrated cinema ticket computer network for four days, animated 'Super Mario Galaxy' took the top spot at the box office by drawing about 575,000 viewers over three days from the 1st to the 3rd. The share of sales during that period came to as much as 31.5%.
Released on the 29th of last month, the film brought Mario and Luigi’s galaxy adventure to life in a spectacular way, winning explosive support from audiences of all ages.
The box office #2 title was the sequel 'The Devil Wears Prada 2', returning after 20 years. Opened at the same time as 'Super Mario Galaxy', it pulled in about 482,000 viewers during the weekend (27.7% share of sales), battling fiercely for the lead, but failed to reclaim #1.
A New Chapter in Korean Horror 'Salmokji' Rises to #3 in All-Time Hits
The momentum of Korean horror film 'Salmokji', starring 'Kim Hye-yoon', is fierce. During the weekend it drew about 398,000 viewers and settled into third place at the box office.
In particular, 'Salmokji' surpassed 2.6 million cumulative admissions, beating the 2002 release 'Phone' (2.6 million) and claiming the remarkable feat of becoming the #3 all-time box office hit among Korean horror films. Given the current trend in audience draw, breaking the record of 'Gonjiam' (2.68 million), the all-time #2 title, also appears all but certain.
Next, the Hollywood SF blockbuster 'Project Hail Mary' ranked fourth with about 96,000 admissions.
The Future Landscape of Theaters Seen Through Reservation Rate Indicators
For the theaters in the future as well, 'Super Mario Galaxy'’s solo run is expected. As of 9:00 a.m. on the 4th, the reservation rate indicators are as follows.
#1: 'Super Mario Galaxy' - 40.7% (about 135,000 viewers)
#2: 'The Devil Wears Prada 2' - 19.6% (about 65,000 viewers)
#3: 'Salmokji' - 11.1% (about 36,000 viewers)
With the box office momentum from the weekend carrying over into weekday theaters, the three-way top lineup is expected to continue for the time being.
