Romance of City Night Views and Movies: Seoul Film Center Opens “Sky Cinema”

“Seoul Film Center,” which opened in Chungmuro in November last year, will begin full operations on the 15th with its 10th-floor rooftop movie theater, “Sky Cinema,” offering the charm of the city’s night skyline. Spanning a total floor area of 4,806㎡ and equipped with three indoor screening venues, the site has been reborn as a complete complex cultural space with the addition of this new 50-seat outdoor screening area.

To mark its May opening, it will screen “Midnight in Paris” (15th), “Kim’s Video” (22nd), and “8½” (29th) every Friday at 8:00 p.m. In addition, a variety of art films will welcome audiences, including a special program titled “Again, the Land of Dreams,” which commemorates the May 18 Democratic Uprising, as well as “Made in Gwangju,” and a special showcase of French short films. A director-and-actor conversation with the audience (GV) is also planned, drawing strong anticipation from movie fans.

Seoul Film Center, Leading the Chungmuro Renaissance, Steps Up as a Citizen-Participation Hub

Beyond simply watching films, “Seoul Film Center” will significantly expand citizen-experience content such as creating smartphone movies and taking strolls through the alleys of Chungmuro. After finishing a free trial run in May, it will switch to paid access starting June 1. Admission fees are set at 7,000 won for adults and 6,000 won for teens, roughly in line with the average level of public movie theaters. In addition, through an agreement with nearby merchants’ associations, discounts on food and drinks are offered when tickets are presented, contributing to activating the local business district.

“Lee Soo-yeon,” Seoul’s economic affairs minister, said, “An average of 600 people visit each day and we recorded a booking rate of 86%, helping it establish itself as a core cultural space in the heart of the city,” and expressed a commitment to actively support the initiative.
