Carlos Mencia, a comedian who ruled the U.S. stand-up comedy world as a mid-2000s entertainment giant, was arrested on the spot by police on suspicion of hiding a massive income amounting to $8.7 million (about 12 billion won) and evading taxes.

■ Arrested in a surprise raid at 7 a.m.… First target of a newly created “business tax investigation unit”

According to reports by the AP and local media on the 18th (local time), Nathan Hochman, the Los Angeles (LA) County district attorney, held a news conference and officially announced that he had arrested and charged Carlos Mencia with tax evasion. Hochman said at the briefing that Mencia is “one of the most malicious tax scofflaws who repeatedly fail to pay in California.”

Mencia, whose real name is Ned Arnel Holness, is facing a total of 12 felony counts, including six felonies for allegedly failing to intentionally file personal income tax returns for tax evasion purposes (2019 to 2024, one count each) and six felonies for allegedly failing to report corporate income tax.

Prosecutors said Mencia hid total income of $8.7 million (about 12 billion won) since 2019, which resulted in more than $300,000 (about 410 million won) in unpaid California state taxes alone. This prosecution is the first case to be handled in court since District Attorney Hochman launched the newly created “Business Tax Fraud Unit” in May.

■ The price of ignoring 78 warnings… Could face up to 11 years in prison in court

Authorities raided Mencia’s home in Los Angeles early Thursday morning around 7 a.m. and arrested him. Mencia is currently detained in jail with bail set at $250,000 (about 340 million won), and is scheduled to make his first appearance in court on the upcoming Monday.

Prosecutors argued that he had previously paid taxes diligently before 2019, but afterward he ignored in full 78 payment demand and warning notices sent by the state government and intentionally evaded his taxes. If all charges are found guilty at trial, Mencia could face a maximum of 11 years in prison. In addition, interest and penalties will be added to the unpaid amounts, leading to fines that could amount to double the taxes he originally owed. Mencia’s attorney, as of now, is not responding to requests for interviews.

■ Past remark that “taxes are a good thing” backfires… After a “idea theft” controversy, his fall continues

Born in Honduras and raised in Los Angeles, Mencia began performing at LA comedy clubs in the late 1980s. With his biting jokes that targeted race, class, and Latino culture, he built a following. From 2005 to 2008, he hosted the sketch comedy show “Mind of Mencia,” named after him, on Comedy Central, cementing his place among the highest-paid comedians in the United States.

During the news conference, District Attorney Hochman also criticized Mencia’s alleged hypocrisy by pointing to past footage from Mencia’s 2007 broadcast, in which he said, “I might have something unusual about me, but I think taxes are a good thing.”

Mencia’s career took a downhill slide as, in the late 2000s, fellow comedians increasingly exposed “jokes (ideas) theft and plagiarism.” In particular, Joe Rogan, widely regarded as the world’s top podcaster today, dealt a major blow after a viral clip surfaced in which Rogan publicly targeted Mencia’s plagiarism from the stage of a comedy club in 2007. Mencia has defended himself on podcasts and elsewhere, saying that he “may have absorbed someone else’s material unconsciously, but there was no intentional stealing.”

Even as recently as now, he had continued to tour steadily with stand-up dates, stopping at clubs and smaller theaters. But as he was detained this week ahead of his upcoming West Coast California performances and a solo show in Las Vegas next week, he was set to suffer a devastating disruption to all entertainment schedules going forward.
