' Toy Story 5' Opens the Prelude to a Long Reign at the Box Office

Disney and Pixar’s masterpiece animated film `'Toy Story 5'` seized full control of theaters even in its second week after release, locking in a steady, record-setting run at the box office.

According to data from the Korea Box Office Information System (KOBIS) released on the 29th, during the three-day weekend period from the 26th to the 28th, `'Toy Story 5'` drew in more than 500,000 viewers, maintaining its overwhelming No. 1 spot. Its share of sales was as high as 45.4%. Since its release on the 17th, the film’s cumulative audience total has jumped to more than 1.617 million. The momentum goes beyond simple box-office success and is being read as a strong signal that this summer could see theaters dominated for the long term.

The No. 2 box-office title went to the well-made mystery thriller `'Eye Drops,'` which brought in about 232,000 people (21.1% share of sales). In the film, photojournalist Seo Jin, who is gradually losing her eyesight due to a genetic condition, uncovers the brutal truth surrounding the deaths of her twin sister, Seo In. In the project, actor `'Shin Mina'` has been drawing both critical acclaim and audience praise with a chilling one-person, two-role performance, proving its strong ticket power.

Following that, director `'Yeon Sang-ho'`’s K-zombie film `'Hive'`, which builds an original dystopian universe, ranked third with around 96,000 viewers (8.8%). Meanwhile, the comedy film `'Wild Thing'`, featuring a standout acting ensemble by actors `'Kang Dong-won'` and `'Oh Jung-se'`, recorded about 67,000 people (5.9%) and settled into No. 4.

Real-time advance-ticket reservation indicators are also an intriguing watch point, hinting at a fierce reshuffling in the weeks ahead. As of 9 a.m. on the 29th, `'Toy Story 5'` is holding firm at No. 1 with 20.4% (about 27,000 advance ticketgoers), while `'Matty Supreme'`, a new film starring Hollywood’s in-demand actor `'Timothée Chalamet'` ahead of its Jan. 1 release next month, is giving chase with 16.8% (about 22,000 advance ticketgoers).

For its part, the currently playing `'Eye Drops'` is staying firmly in the No. 3 slot with a reservation rate of 12.3%, and the new animated feature `'Doraemon the Movie: The Undersea Secrets of Shinn-gu'`, which boasts a strong fan base, moved into No. 4 with 6.1%, setting the stage for a spring-and-fall battle at the box office where a variety of genres clash.
