“Hope” and “Spider-Man” power double wins… A reshuffle looms for entertainment stocks

The capital markets moved quickly after a string of tentpole blockbusters that swept through the summer theater season. In early trading on the 30th, shares of Korea’s biggest multiplex operator, CJ CGV, surged more than 13%, leading a strong upward rally across the entertainment sector.

According to Korea Exchange (KRX) data, as of 9:09 a.m. on the 30th, CJ CGV was trading at 5,420 won, up 13.63% from the previous trading day. The move reflects more than just the start of a seasonal peak; it also shows investors’ confidence in the dominant box-office performers currently holding screens and the Hollywood mega-projects that are poised to hit theaters.

The front-runner in the theater revival is unmistakably director Na Hong-jin’s new film, Hope. With overwhelming suspense that captivated both critics and audiences, the film has driven a wedge for long-running box-office success as it looks all but certain to top 4 million moviegoers over the weekend. In addition, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, a Marvel blockbuster starring Tom Holland that hit screens the day before, pulled in a whopping 680,000 viewers on its opening day alone, injecting explosive momentum into the theater scene.

The box-office streak does not stop there. On August 5 next month, Christopher Nolan’s much-anticipated Odyssey is set to go on release. With screen showdowns between auteurs flexing powerful ticket appeal expected, the summer blockbuster race is forecast to be fiercer than ever.
