Is it Nolan’s Epic or Marvel’s Dash… A Fight at the Weekend Box Office Ahead of the 5-Million Mark

Christopher Nolan’s ambitious new film 'Odyssey' is seizing theaters as soon as it opens and driving a box-office surge. According to data from the Integrated Computer Network for Movie Ticket Reservations, as of the previous day 'Odyssey' drew about 246,000 viewers, taking the top spot in South Korea’s box office and beating 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day'. The share of sales revenue it collected that day comes to a whopping 45.2%.

The movie is a major production that reinterprets Homer’s immortal epic 'Odysseia' from ancient Greece through a modern, original lens. It brings to the screen the harrowing journey of King Odysseus as he heads home to Ithaca after the end of the Trojan War. In particular, 'Matt Damon' leads a star-studded cast that includes 'Tom Holland', 'Anne Hathaway', 'Charlize Theron', and 'Robert Pattinson', crafting an overwhelming acting ensemble. Since its release on the 5th, it has already surpassed 541,000 cumulative viewers in just two days, showing a steep upward climb.

Even the defense efforts by 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day', which slipped to second place under pressure from the new release, are far from easy. The film pulled in about 237,000 viewers the previous day (a 40.1% share of sales revenue), setting up a nail-biting close race with the No. 1 title. Since its release on the 29th of last month, it has recorded about 4.647 million cumulative viewers, and expectations are that it will reach the '5-million viewer' milestone comfortably starting this weekend.

Next, the theatrical animated feature 'Love Hatching: The Legend of Whale Gemstones', which boasts a strong fan base, held onto third place by drawing about 43,000 viewers (a 6.5% share). Meanwhile, director Na Hong-jin’s new film 'Hope' (about 27,000 viewers) and the animated 'Minions & Monsters' (about 4,000 viewers) each landed in fourth and fifth place.

Pre-booking rate indicators also clearly show the intense head-to-head duel between the two big releases. As of 9 a.m. on the day in question, 'Odyssey' is maintaining a solid lead with a pre-booking rate of 48.7% (about 680,000 pre-booked viewers). 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' trails closely with 33.8% (about 471,000 viewers). 'Love Hatching: The Legend of Whale Gemstones' (8.4%, about 117,000 viewers) and 'Hope' (2.3%, about 31,000 viewers) are also targeting a niche market, waiting for viewers’ choices. This weekend, as the spectacle of a master’s grand mise-en-scène clashes with the flashy action of a superhero story, attention inside and outside the film industry is focused on where moviegoers’ footsteps will head.
