Megahit’s enduring momentum undiminished by military service hiatus
The music video for BTS’ ‘Mic Drop’ (MIC Drop, Steve Aoki remix) has surpassed 1.6 billion views on YouTube, adding another landmark achievement to the group’s record. Big Hit Music said the video passed 1.6 billion cumulative views at around 6:37 p.m. on the 16th.
BTS now has its fourth music video to surpass 1.6 billion views, following ‘Dynamite’, ‘Boy With Luv’ and ‘DNA.’ The achievement is an unparalleled record for a K-pop artist and demonstrates that music fans worldwide continue to embrace the group years after the songs’ releases.
The ‘Mic Drop’ remix was originally a track on BTS’ fifth EP before global DJ Steve Aoki reinvented it in the electro-trap genre in November 2017. Upon its release, the song made a powerful impression on the global music market by debuting at No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100, the U.S. magazine’s main singles chart.
The music video won critical acclaim through its seamless blend of distinctive sound, stylish visuals and the commanding performances of the group’s seven members. In particular, the signature choreography in which the members drop their microphones near the end visually amplifies the song’s weighty message and has spawned countless cover videos.
Meanwhile, contrary to incorrectly circulated rumors that BTS would hold a South American tour called ‘ARIRANG’, the group is currently in a ‘military service hiatus’ as its members fulfill their mandatory military duties in sequence. Even so, the group’s previously released songs continue to set new records, further fueling worldwide anticipation for BTS’ full-group activities in 2025.
