Jung Young-joo elected inaugural chair of Korea Musical Actors Association, backed by 80 actors

Artists onstage, left in the blind spot, raise the anchor for rights protection

The Korea Musical Actors Association has officially launched to safeguard the practical rights of musical theater actors, whose struggles have long been obscured by the spotlight. At the association's inaugural meeting held on the 17th at Jeonghwa Arts University, actor Jung Young-joo was elected its inaugural chair with overwhelming support.

The association's creation goes beyond simply fostering camaraderie. Eighty actors who helped lay the foundation for South Korea's musical theater industry, including Nam Kyung-eup, Jeon Soo-kyung, Shin Sung-woo and Ahn Jae-wook, joined in large numbers as founding members. Lee Gun-myung and Song Yong-jin also joined the board, completing the organization's framework. The move reflects a strong determination to build directly the institutional safety net that actors have sorely lacked compared with the industry's explosive growth.

From unpaid appearance fees to safety concerns, association takes on role of official channel

The association is taking aim at chronic problems that arise in the field, from production contracts and rehearsals to live performances. It has pledged decisive legal support for unpaid appearance fees and contract breaches that individual actors have had to handle on their own. The initiative is central to leveling an uneven playing field and establishing a standard-contract culture across the industry.

The association will also serve as an official channel for actors to speak with one voice on safety issues onstage. It plans to systematically collect relevant cases and data in the future to drive practical legal and institutional reforms. In addition, it intends to establish career-management and institutional-education programs for both emerging and established actors, creating a sustainable ecosystem in which artists can focus solely on their creative work.
