A master filmmaker’s vision on the big screen…classics brought to life with Dolby sound
Moviegoers will have the chance to revisit the work of director 'Lee Chang-dong', who has left a significant mark on Korean cinema. Multiplex operator 'Megabox' announced on the 26th that it will exclusively present the 'Lee Chang-dong Retrospective' for three weeks, from the 28th through the 17th of next month.
The retrospective was organized to celebrate the success of Lee’s new film, 'Possible Love', which won the Grand Jury Prize (Silver Lion) at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. Produced by Netflix, 'Possible Love' is a masterful film that portrays, with both acuity and warmth, the intersecting perspectives of Hoseok ('Seol Kyung-gu'), a laid-off worker, and his wife Miok ('Jeon Do-yeon'), alongside director Yeji ('Cho Yeo-jeong') and her husband Sangwoo ('Zo In-sung'), who are trying to capture the couple’s hard life in a documentary.
The lineup includes all six feature films Lee directed before his new release. The films will be screened at a rate of two per week over three weeks, beginning with his debut, 'Green Fish' (1997), which probes the underside of Korean society, followed by 'Peppermint Candy' (2000), which traces the pain of an era in reverse; 'Oasis' (2002), a provocative portrayal of love among society’s marginalized; 'Secret Sunshine' (2007), which asks questions about human redemption and forgiveness; 'Poetry' (2010), which explores the boundaries between art and morality; and 'Burning' (2018), which weaves the younger generation’s helplessness and anger into a mystery thriller.
In particular, the films will be shown not in standard theaters but in Dolby auditoriums, known for their visual clarity and immersive sound. Megabox said, "This is a rare opportunity to fully experience a master filmmaker’s philosophy and aesthetics, which resonate across generations, with the best possible picture and sound."
Special perks are also in store for moviegoers. Tickets for all screenings are priced at '10,000 won', significantly lowering the barrier to a theater visit, and original film posters will be given to audience members on a first-come, first-served basis.
