The ‘SNL Korea’ universe evolves, expanding into a scripted sitcom

OTT platform ‘Coupang Play’ is turning a popular sketch from its original comedy show into a standalone sitcom. ‘Smile Clinic’ is set to premiere on Dec. 3, with new episodes dropping every Thursday at 5 p.m.

Set in a dermatology clinic in Gangnam, the medical sitcom realistically portrays the tense rivalries and everyday struggles among its staff. Building on the world that drew an overwhelming response from viewers last season, the series expands its story and characters, presenting them in standalone episodes.

The cast includes comedians Lee Su-ji, Kim Won-hoon and Kim Gyu-won, known for their distinctive character work, as well as actor Ahn Ju-mi, among others. Playing hospital staff members with distinct personalities, they are set to deliver humor and pathos that anyone who works in an office can relate to.

‘Smile Clinic’ first appeared on ‘SNL Korea Season 7’ last year and established itself as a top sketch during Season 8. The move goes beyond extending a sketch, expanding it into a standalone IP. The case is seen as a successful model for how short-form content can evolve into a full-fledged program in South Korea’s streaming market.
