Marvel's latest superhero movie 'Fantastic Four: First Steps' has achieved a heroic debut, recording 218 million dollars (approximately 2180 billion won) at the global box office.
Directed by Matt Shakman, this film has shown a strong start, earning 100 million dollars overseas alone. This slightly surpasses the overseas opening weekend performance of 'Superman', which recorded 95 million dollars in 78 markets last July. However, in total worldwide figures, 'Superman' narrowly leads with 220 million dollars.
'Fantastic Four' is screening in 52 markets, generating high revenues in Mexico (12 million dollars), the UK (10.8 million dollars), France (5.7 million dollars), and Brazil (5.1 million dollars). However, it only managed to earn 4.5 million dollars in China, reflecting a lackluster performance. This is analyzed to be due to China's cold response to most superhero movies in recent years.
Starring Pedro Pascal (Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Invisible Woman), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Thing), and Joseph Quinn (Human Torch), this film depicts the adventures of four superheroes protecting Earth from a cosmic entity that threatens to engulf the world. Strong reviews and positive word-of-mouth are expected to help at the box office in the coming weeks.
This initial response is an encouraging sign for Disney and Marvel, who were once Hollywood's most reliable hitmakers but have recently struggled with commercial consistency. Last year, 'Deadpool & Wolverine' achieved a massive success of 1 billion dollars, but this year, previously released films 'Captain America: Brave New World' (February) and 'Thunderbolts' (May) both failed to recoup their production costs of 180 million dollars, resulting in losses.
Meanwhile, other blockbuster films have also set notable box office milestones. 'Superman' and 'F1' have surpassed 500 million dollars, while 'Jurassic World: Dominion' has exceeded 700 million dollars globally over the weekend.
'Superman', which was released two weeks earlier than 'Fantastic Four', added 19.8 million dollars in 78 regions, showing a steep decline rate of 57%. This adaptation from Warner Bros. and DC Studios has so far recorded 213 million dollars at the overseas box office, falling short of expectations. However, bolstered by greater support from North American audiences, it has achieved a cumulative global revenue of 500.2 million dollars in its third week.
Universal's 'Jurassic World: Dominion' and Apple's 'F1' have been in theaters for a longer period, but have shown slightly higher performance on the weekend charts compared to 'Superman'. This is analyzed to be due to the lack of direct competition among comic book fans, unlike 'Superman'.
'Jurassic World: Dominion' has earned 23.5 million dollars in its fourth week across 82 regions, raising its overseas cumulative revenue to 416 million dollars. This dinosaur adventure has recorded a total revenue of 718 million dollars so far, making it one of the three Hollywood films this year to surpass 700 million dollars. Starring Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali, this film presents impressive figures, but faces high success standards compared to the previous trilogy starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, each of which earned 1 billion dollars globally.
Meanwhile, Brad Pitt's racing drama 'F1' continues to show steady strength in its fifth week, earning 20 million dollars across 78 markets. With a production budget of 250 million dollars, this film has so far generated an impressive 344 million dollars overseas and 509 million dollars globally.
