Netflix Chinese Subtitles Refer to Kimchi as 'Sinchi' Instead of 'Paochai'

Netflix popular entertainment show 'Physical: Asia' is receiving positive reactions from viewers for referring to kimchi as 'Sinchi' (辛奇) in its Chinese subtitles.

Professor Seo Kyung-duk from Sungshin Women's University stated that this is the first time Netflix has reflected the correct notation by referring to kimchi as 'Sinchi' in episode 12 of 'Physical: Asia'. He welcomed Netflix's application of the 'Sinchi' notation and emphasized that a global platform like Netflix will contribute to correcting the confusion of kimchi's identity by reflecting the official standards of the Korean government. The government revised the 'Guidelines for Foreign Language Translation and Notation of Public Terms' in 2021 to specify 'Sinchi' as the correct Chinese notation for kimchi. Considering Netflix's influence, Professor Seo added that this change in notation will serve as a symbolic measure against some unreasonable claims within China.
