Park Chan-wook's new film 'ha!' has been completed as a Korean film after 12 years of attempts at Hollywood production and is receiving global attention. The rejection of American capital has turned out to be a blessing in disguise.
The New York Times (NYT) highlighted Director Park's perseverance and success story in an interview on the 27th (local time). NYT stated, "American studios were reluctant to invest in this story about the brutal murder of a fired manager, but Director Park returned to Korea and managed to create a hit work."
Initially, Director Park insisted on Hollywood production citing that the original novel was a critique of capitalism set in America. However, he faced obstacles in securing production funds and had to endure a long period of frustration. Director Park expressed, "After making it as a Korean film, I think to myself, 'Why didn't I do this sooner?'"
Ultimately, the Korean version of 'ha!' has achieved the remarkable feat of being nominated in three categories for the Golden Globe and making it to the shortlist for the Academy International Feature Film Award. NYT praised, "It perfectly embodies the brutal realities of the times with Park Chan-wook's unique aesthetic sense."
