"9 Months of Hell, and Survival"... Netflix Releases 'Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart'

In 2002, a girl who was abducted from her bedroom and miraculously returned after enduring a horrific nine-month captivity stood in front of the camera again after 24 years. This time, she speaks of hope as a 'survivor' rather than a 'victim'.

According to Netflix on the 22nd (Korean time), the new documentary 'Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart', released on the 21st, has received intense interest from viewers worldwide right after its release.

◆ The Mask of the Street Preacher 'Emmanuel'

The work deals with the abduction case that occurred in the early morning of June 5, 2002, at a home in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. At that time, 14-year-old Smart was abducted from her bedroom by a day laborer hired by her family, Brian David Mitchell. Mitchell, who called himself 'Emmanuel' claiming to have received a divine revelation, dragged Smart around for nine months, committing sexual violence and abuse.

Directed by Benedict Sanderson, this documentary reconstructs the urgent nine-month search process through interviews with investigators and family members. Notably, it includes the testimony of Smart's sister Mary Katherine, who provided crucial evidence leading to the capture of the perpetrator, adding weight to the narrative.

◆ "Thank you for surviving"

On March 12, 2003, Smart was dramatically rescued after a citizen reported her while walking the streets with her abductors who had returned to Utah from California. Now 38 years old, Smart calmly shares her horrific memories in the documentary. She expressed her intention to participate in the production, saying, "I hope people know that even after experiencing terrible things, one can still live a wonderful life."

◆ Beyond Tragedy to Hope

Now married and a mother of three, Smart currently leads the 'Elizabeth Smart Foundation', working as an advocate to help victims of sexual crimes and abductions like herself. Meanwhile, the main perpetrator Mitchell, who tried to take her life away, is currently serving a life sentence, while his accomplice wife Wanda Barzee was released in 2018 and is on the sex offender registry.
