The legendary anchor who wrote the history of Spanish-language broadcasting in the United States and was a spiritual pillar of the New York Hispanic community, Rafael Pineda, has passed away. He was 88 years old.
On the 27th (Korean time), Univision 41 (WXTV) announced in an official statement, "Today, with deep sadness, we announce the passing of the respected journalist and pioneering voice who shaped Hispanic media in America, Rafael Pineda." He passed away peacefully in Florida on the 26th surrounded by his family.
◆ 42 Years Documenting New York's History
Born in 1937 in Baracoa, Cuba, Pineda moved to New York in his youth and began his media career at WXTV in 1968. Notably, he held the main news anchor position for an incredible 41 years from 1972 to 2013, setting a record as the "longest-serving news anchor in New York" at the time of his retirement.
He was more than just a news presenter; he was a bridge of reliable information and a communication channel for millions of Latin American immigrants who struggled with English. His precise Spanish and dignified presentation became the standard for Hispanic journalism.
◆ "I Would Walk This Path Again If I Were Reborn"
In 2013, when he put down the microphone at the age of 77, he left an emotional farewell saying, "If I were given the chance to live my life again, I would live it the same way," adding, "Channel 41 was my home, and it was a home shared with all of you, the viewers." After retirement, he moved to Florida, stepping out of the spotlight to live a peaceful life with his wife and children.
Univision 41 and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists stated, "His legacy will live on forever in the memories of the community he served," and offered their condolences for his passing.
