The film 〈Arco〉, which has garnered global anticipation by being nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 98th Academy Awards, has unveiled its second poster featuring mysterious visuals. Directed by Hugo Bienvenu, a graphic artist, the film has received acclaim for transcending the limits of 2D animation and is ready to meet domestic audiences.
The newly released second poster is set against the backdrop of the year 2932, where houses are built on colorful clouds. The protagonist 'Arco', gliding through the sky with a rainbow-colored cloak, evokes a lyrical and fairy-tale atmosphere rarely seen in the existing sci-fi genre. Notably, Arco's courageous moment of attempting time travel, which is forbidden for those under 12, by secretly borrowing his sister's cloak and jumping down from the clouds, is vividly captured.
A Boy Riding a Rainbow, Seeking Hope in a Gray Earth
The film begins when the future boy Arco unexpectedly crash-lands in the 'Gray Earth' of 2075. In a place stripped of color due to climate crisis and environmental destruction, Arco meets a girl named 'Iris', who dreams of a green tomorrow. The two children, who are both the future and the past for each other, embark on a special adventure to find the rainbow that will send Arco back home while evading the pursuit of mysterious triplets.
〈Arco〉 has already been recognized for its artistic quality with a Rotten Tomatoes freshness score of 93%. As noted by The Washington Post, which stated it "breaks the limits of 2D animation", director Hugo Bienvenu has combined the delicacy of hand-drawn techniques with innovative visuals to create a unique sci-fi worldview. Additionally, the involvement of global star Natalie Portman as a producer, who also lends her voice to the project, has increased the film's credibility.
Neon's Choice Leading the Oscar Journey… Anticipating Emotion Across Generations and Borders
The film has captured the attention of the global film industry by winning the highest honor, the Crystal Award (Grand Prize), and the Best Music Award at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. Notably, the fact that it is a work chosen by the North American distributor Neon, which successfully led the Oscar campaigns for 〈Parasite〉 and 〈Anora〉, proves the strong competitiveness that 〈Arco〉 will showcase.
As the boy's journey, which began from a small curiosity, unfolds into a warm message of solidarity and hope in a cold dystopia, 〈Arco〉 is set to officially release in theaters nationwide on March 11 (Wednesday).
