The leads of the legendary Korean melodrama film ‘One Fine Spring Day’ (2001), actors Lee Young-ae and Yoo Ji-tae, reunite on drama screens for the first time in 25 years. On the 23rd, production company IWILL Media officially announced that the two actors have been confirmed to star as the male and female leads in the new drama ‘Jae-young-in,’ with production set to begin within this year.
After 25 years since ‘Wanna get some ramen?’… A deep melodrama drawn from matured skills
For Lee Young-ae and Yoo Ji-tae to share the screen in a single project is an astonishing 25-year gap since 2001. At the time, ‘One Fine Spring Day’ became a symbol of Korean melodrama, leaving behind countless iconic lines such as “Wanna get some ramen?” and “How does love change?” Now, with both actors having built distinctive careers from their respective positions over the long years, all eyes in the industry are on what kind of emotional nuances they will reveal this time.
This work, ‘Jae-young-in,’ is a mystery romance that depicts the process of two men and women who are left behind alone falling in love, and how the ill fate and hidden truth surrounding them come to light. Beyond a simple romance, it addresses loss, wounds, and collisions of memory, hinting at heightened genre suspense.
A woman carrying loss and a man who lost his memories… Teasing an intense emotional storyline
Lee Young-ae will play ‘Joo Young-in,’ an art teacher and painter living with the sorrow of losing her son. She is expected to portray the character’s complex inner world with sensitivity, carrying memories of loss. Yoo Ji-tae takes the role of ‘Shin Jae-i,’ the CEO of an architecture firm who may seem flawless on the outside, but has an internal wound known as dissociative amnesia.
The key to the story is the process in which two people, each with deprivation and secrets, meet and change. In particular, Lee Young-ae’s selection of her next project marks her return just five months after ‘Good Day, Eun-soo,’ which ended last October. Yoo Ji-tae chose this work as his comeback to the TV drama market after the film ‘The Man Who Lives with the King,’ which recently sparked a box-office surge by surpassing 14.75 million viewers, raising expectations even further.
A second meeting between director O Gi-hwan of ‘Gift’ and Lee Young-ae… A solid lineup of production staff
The director is O Gi-hwan, who has showcased a sensorial directing style through films such as ‘Gift’ and ‘The Standard for Work.’ Director O has worked with Lee Young-ae on ‘Gift’ in the past, and the deep trust between director and actor is expected to add synergy to the production. The screenplay will be written by screenwriter Joo Eun-jeong, who penned dramas such as ‘Hotel King’ and ‘Banquet of the Gods,’ to heighten the gripping pull of the narrative.
