The voice of “Hanna,” which swept theaters back in 2006, echoes again in animation beyond the passage of 20 years.
On the 23rd, Episode Company (formerly CarrieSoft) announced that it secured the license for the legendary romantic comedy IP 〈200 Pounds Beauty〉 and has begun in earnest work on a global K-animation production targeting all age groups.
This project puts the emphasis not just on a simple remake, but on reimagining the original’s charm with a modern sensibility. Based on the solid narrative of the original directed by Kim Yong-hwa, which attracted 6.08 million viewers, the company aims to build a global IP universe that carries forward the success trajectory recently demonstrated by Netflix 〈K-Pop Demon Hunters〉.
Character changes are also drawing attention. The strong “Hanna,” a shadow singer who previously provided the voice for a lip-sync singer, evolves into the global icon “Hanna” with overwhelming vocal talent. While keeping the emotional tone of the original portrayed by actress Kim Ah-jung and Joo Jin-mo, producer Han Sang-jun reinterprets the character as a cold-blooded figure obsessed with capitalism and commercial value, heightening tension throughout the story. In addition, original animation-only characters symbolize the image-centered entertainment industry—like “Ami,” and Hanna’s helper “Shin Hye-jung”—joining the lineup to expand the world.
Episode Company will not only produce animation, but also roll out character commercialization (Product Design) businesses at the same time, including music and goods. The strategy is to maximize the strengths of the OST, which has continued to be loved as a steady bestseller, and capture both “the fun of watching” and “the fun of listening.” An Episode Company representative said, “By adding our own animation production capabilities to a proven K-IP, we will build a unique brand that will be loved in the global market.”
