Netflix’s new horror miniseries ‘Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen’ unveiled its shocking conclusion right alongside the release of all episodes. Beyond a simple psychological thriller, this work has been praised for twisting the universal theme of marriage in the most brutal way—unraveling the curse of a family passed down through generations.

The curse passed down through generations and the “sunset deadline”

The story’s core premise—the reality of the curse—is revealed in episode 4. This curse begins with an ancestor who, in order to revive a deceased lover from the dead, made a deal with Death. The cruel terms state that if the family’s descendants are unable to marry their “true soulmates” before sunset on the wedding day, the individuals involved—and their families—will die while bleeding. Protagonist Rachel (played by Camila Morrone) realizes she, too, is trapped in the grip of this curse after witnessing the horrifying death of her mother, Alexandra (played by Victoria Pedretti).

A blood-soaked wedding reception born from mistrust and a broken vow

On the wedding day, Rachel is deeply disappointed when her fiancé, Nicky (played by Adam DiMarco), doesn’t take the curse seriously. As a result, she loses confidence in him and can no longer believe he’s her soulmate. When the ritual isn’t completed before sunset, the curse descends on Nicky’s family. A gruesome tragedy unfolds as Nicky’s mother, his sister, and other family members collapse one by one, bleeding. By then, Nicky—terrified at last—pushes ahead with the ceremony, but Rachel’s trust in him had already completely shattered.

In the end, Nicky survives because he truly believed Rachel was his soulmate. But Rachel—who no longer sees Nicky as her soulmate—pays the price for the curse. She bleeds in the snow and dies, only to be resurrected soon after as “The Witness,” the one tasked with observing the family’s curse. She is sentenced to an eternity of watching other people’s weddings.

A battered survival—and the birth of a new watcher

In the final moments of the drama, resurrected Rachel leaves the family behind, coldly walking away while Nicky, traumatized by the massacre, is left behind. She delivers a chilling warning to Nicky’s nephew, Jude: “You really have to be careful about who you marry,” implying—ominously—that she will become the witness for every wedding that follows. The ending, where Rachel strips off the bloodied wedding dress, throws the wedding ring out the window, and smiles, reflects the complicated feelings of a protagonist who’s freed—at least in a tragic, hard way—from patriarchal bonds and the wrong kind of relationship.

Showrunner Haley Z. Boston stressed that the sharp contrast between the two main characters is the heart of the work, saying, “Nicky stayed a romantic to the very end, but Rachel is the one who realizes the illusion behind the relationship.”
