With the end of CBS’s flagship late-night talk show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the U.S. broadcast network CBS has declared the start of a new era in late-night entertainment.
■ First broadcast on May 22... Two-hour continuous “Comics Block” lineup
According to CBS and coverage from foreign media on the 7th (local time), The Late Show will wrap up with its final broadcast on May 21. Starting at 11:35 p.m. the very next day, May 22, “Comics Unleashed”, hosted by Byron Allen, will take the air, followed at 12:35 a.m. by the comedy quiz show “Funny You Should Ask”.
This relaunch is considered bold because it breaks away from the traditional late-night talk-show format and shifts to a “comedy block” style that combines stand-up comedy with a game-show format. Comics Unleashed is a hybrid of talk and stand-up, in which multiple comedians present short sets on specific topics, while Funny You Should Ask is a quiz show featuring comedians’ witty banter.
■ Byron Allen’s High-Stakes Move... Expected Improvement in “Profitability” for CBS Late-Night Slots
The core of this scheduling change lies in an adjustment to the business model. Byron Allen, founder and CEO of Allen Media Group, took the approach of buying the time slot directly from CBS using a time-buy (Time Buy) arrangement. By having Allen’s side sell the ad inventory directly and operate it, CBS can reduce production cost burdens while securing a structure that guarantees revenue.
In a statement, Byron Allen said, “We launched Comics Unleashed 20 years ago to create a platform where fellow comedians can make people laugh freely,” adding, “Thank you for CBS’s trust for giving us an opportunity at a time when more laughter is needed around the world.” He previously, in October of last year, when CBS announced the end of The Late Show, expressed strong determination to enter the late-night market, saying it was “the moment we had been waiting for for 50 years.”
■ The Late-Night Talk-Show Boom Fades... Shifts in Terrestrial Channel Programming Strategy
In the industry, this relaunch is being viewed as a signal that the era of traditional, high-cost late-night talk shows is ending and that programming will be reorganized around more efficient and profit-oriented content. Much attention is on whether the two new programs—led by key production personnel from Allen Media Group—can successfully fill the void left by Stephen Colbert.
Viewers’ eyes are on how Byron Allen’s “comedy assault,” inheriting the baton of the legendary late-night slot, will change the nights of American audiences.
