Actor Ok Taec-yeon (38) meets fans around the world with a Netflix original series, following news of his recent marriage. Netflix announced that it will unveil Ok Taec-yeon’s starring Japanese new series, ‘Soulmate (Soul Mate),’ in a major release on the 14th of next month.
■ A decade of two men drawn to each other’s loneliness… “Draws the resonance of the soul”
In ‘Soulmate,’ when ‘Ryu’ (played by Lee Isomura Hayato), who leaves everything behind and flees Japan, finds himself in a church in a foreign land facing a crisis of death, the story begins as he is saved by the help of ‘Johann,’ a Korean boxer (played by Ok Taec-yeon).
In the drama, Ok Taec-yeon plays ‘Hwang Yo-han’ (황요한), a boxing player who has lived a rough life without being able to properly tend to his own wounds. Meticulously, the series will depict how two men who carry their injuries with them become soulmates—healing and comforting each other over the span of ten years, with Berlin, Seoul, and Tokyo as the backdrop. In particular, the production is known as Ok Taec-yeon’s first foray into the queer romance genre, drawing explosive interest from fans both at home and abroad.
■ A meeting of Korea-Japan content masters… Expectations for global box-office success
The project holds special meaning in that it is a global collaboration led by Korea and Japan’s representative production companies. Korea’s content powerhouse Studio Dragon and its subsidiary, GTist, join forces with Japan’s strong producing outfit Robot Communications (ROBOT) to participate in the co-production, raising the overall level of completion.
In the released teaser, the intense yet lyrical chemistry between Lee Isomura Hayato and Ok Taec-yeon stands out, signaling the arrival of yet another global hit from Netflix.
■ Ok Taec-yeon, the ‘new groom,’ keeps going full throttle… May is ‘Ok Taec-yeon’s month’
After holding a private wedding on April 24 and becoming a married man, Ok Taec-yeon is showcasing his “catching both work and love” momentum by presenting ‘Soulmate’ as his first official project after the wedding.
Ahead of the project’s release, he will participate in the 2PM Local Debut 15th Anniversary Concert, held at Tokyo Dome on May 9 and 10, and then on the 14th he will meet viewers around the world through Netflix—plans to keep up an unstoppable pace of activities throughout the entire month of May.
