After a long, hard-fought legal battle, Hollywood top stars Blake Lively (Blake Lively, 38) and director-actor Justin Baldoni (Justin Baldoni, 42) have finally put an end to their dispute. The clash that erupted during the production of the film “It Ends With Us” took about 1 year and 5 months to escalate into a lawsuit.
■ “Glory Only in Pain” Dramatic Settlement… Specific Compensation Amount Kept Private
According to major outlets including the New York Times (NYT) and Rolling Stone on April 4 (local time), the attorneys for both sides announced that they had agreed to end all legal disputes through a joint statement issued that day. In the statement, both sides said they “acknowledge that there were many challenges and difficulties during the filmmaking process, and that they recognize that the concerns raised by Lively were worth listening to, in particular.”
The specific terms of the settlement were not disclosed, but some media outlets—including Reuters—reported that no separate monetary compensation appears to have been exchanged as part of the settlement process. With only two weeks left before a civil trial that had been scheduled for May 18 at a New York court, the parties reached a dramatic agreement, avoiding a situation in which Hollywood’s worst public mud fight would be broadcast live.
■ Allegations of Sexual Harassment and a Counterlawsuit… A Scandal Shaking Hollywood
The case first became public during the promotional process for the film “It Ends With Us,” released in August 2024 and a box-office success, when the two lead actors did not attend events together at all. In December of the same year, Lively filed a lawsuit alleging that while filming, the director and her co-star, Baldoni, repeatedly engaged in inappropriate physical contact and made sexual remarks, and that when she raised the issue internally, he carried out a “retaliation campaign” in which an outside PR agency was used to spread malicious rumors about her.
In response, Baldoni said, “Lively and her husband Ryan Reynolds are making baseless claims in an attempt to take away creative control such as edit rights for the film,” and countered with a defamation lawsuit totaling $400 million. During the process, names of well-known figures circulated further as text messages involving Taylor Swift were submitted as evidence, escalating the controversy even more.
■ Did the Court’s Dismissal of “Sexual Harassment” Prove Decisive?
The course of the case changed sharply last month due to a court decision. The trial court dismissed 10 of the 13 claims—those considered core—including alleged sexual harassment—brought by Lively. The outcome reflected that her status as someone who was not a formal employee but rather an “independent contractor” was recognized, along with some acknowledgment of freedom of expression in the creative workplace. Ultimately, the case was narrowed down to only claims of “breach of contract” and “retaliation,” suggesting that both sides concluded there was more practical value in restoring their images through settlement than in continuing the lawsuit.
■ “We Share the Same Goal: Helping Survivors of Domestic Violence”
In a joint statement, the two emphasized, “The film ‘It Ends With Us’ is a source of pride for all of us, and helping survivors of domestic violence and driving changes in awareness is a goal that we all support.” With that, the “Lively-Baldoni case,” one of Hollywood’s biggest scandals in 2024, ended not in a courtroom but in a settlement agreement.
