A comeback of the analog in the digital age—stealing the hearts of 2 million viewers
According to data from the Integrated Ticketing Network for movie admissions, ‘Toy Story 5’ attracted about 429,000 viewers over the three-day weekend period from the 3rd to the 5th, holding on to the top spot with a commanding 38.6% share of sales. Since its release on the 17th of last month, the cumulative attendance has reached 2.218 million.
It marks a return after a full seven years since the previous installment. The full roster of the classic characters—Woody, Buzz, Jesse, and others—is more than enough to stir nostalgia among long-time fans. In particular, the brutal yet fun survival story of toys whose attention was stolen by a smart tablet, ‘LiliPad’, offers a weighty talking point to a modern society sunk in advanced technology, while also forming a broad consensus of sympathy across all age groups.
The challenge from Korean films—and the scramble for the No. 2 spot at the box office—also remains intense. The suspense thriller starring Shin Min-a, ‘Eye-dongja’, drew about 359,000 viewers (32.7% share) over the same period to land in second place, with cumulative attendance of 842,000. In its wake, director Yeon Sang-ho’s original K-zombie tale, ‘Goonche’, ranked third with about 70,000 viewers, while ‘Matti Supreme’, featuring standout performances by Timothée Chalamet, took fourth with about 38,000.
The outlook for future box-office performance is set to swing as major new releases launch fierce challenges. As of 9 a.m. on the 6th, ‘Hope’, the top expected blockbuster of the latter half of the year ahead of its Jan. 15 release, grabbed the top spot with a pre-sale rate of 44.7% (about 86,000). ‘Moana’, which is set to hit theaters on the 8th, is chasing hard in second with 16.2%. Amid the onslaught of these new titles, ‘Toy Story 5’ nonetheless held firm in third place with a pre-sale rate of 8.0%, the highest figure among current releases, signaling an unusual run at the box office.
