■ He overcame cancer, but a tragedy struck unexpectedly… “He closes his eyes with dignity in his family’s arms”

According to foreign media reports on the 13th (local time), Neill, who was receiving treatment at St. Vincent’s private hospital in Sydney, Australia, died peacefully while his family watched.

In a statement from the family through his official Instagram account, they said, “With tremendous sadness, we share the news that Sam Neill passed away in Sydney, Australia, on Monday, July 13.” They added, “His loss was so sudden and unexpected, but we find comfort in the fact that Sam remained in a healthy, cancer-free condition until the very end.” Neill was diagnosed in 2022 with a rare blood cancer, “stage 3 angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma,” and had been battling the illness, but after steady treatment he recently received a judgment of recovery. That is why this sudden news of his death is hitting fans and colleagues even harder.

After news of his passing spread, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon paid tribute on social media, saying, “He began at a time when there was almost no film industry in this country, and for more than 50 years he brought New Zealand’s stories to the world as a great master.” Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also expressed deep condolences, saying, “Sam fought his illness with his trademark humor and wit, and he showed dignified acting in every moment. He will be remembered forever in the hearts of Australians.”

■ From a law school dropout to a “James Bond” contender… a legendary 50-year career

Born in 1947 in Northern Ireland and moved to New Zealand in 1954, Neill—born as Nigel John Bermur Neill—studied law in college but turned to the theater after failing his exams. While earning just $35 a week, he threw himself into acting. He made his Hollywood breakthrough in 1977 with the film 'Sleepng Dogs,' and in 1986 he also underwent a screen test as a likely candidate to succeed Roger Moore as the next “James Bond.”

The peak of his career came in 1993. After delivering a standout performance as Alisdair Stewart, the obsessive husband, in Oscar-winning director Jane Campion’s 'The Piano,' he rose to global stardom by taking the role of Dr. Alan Grant in director Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster 'Jurassic Park.' He went on to prove his “many faces” as he crossed the line between good and evil, from the thriller 'Dead Calm' to the SF horror 'Event Horizon,' and on to his portrayal of the corrupt Detective Inspector Sir Chester Campbell in the wildly popular British drama 'Peaky Blinders.'

■ “I’m not afraid of dying. I just feel there’s something I’ll miss”… the forever “gentleman” who loved the stage

Outside of film, Neill was also a stylish farmer who ran a famous winery called 'Two Paddocks' in New Zealand’s Central Otago region. He has connected with the public through a playful sense of humor, naming animals living on his farm after fellow stars such as Laura Dunn (chicken), Kylie Minogue (duck), and Helena Bonham Carter (cow).

In his memoir published last year, 2023, he disclosed his cancer battle and said he continued a grueling life of chemotherapy every month while strongly refusing to retire. In an interview with The Guardian, he said, “Dying is not at all frightening. I’m just a bit sorry because I want to see the olive and cypress trees I planted with care grow, and I want to see my lovely grandchildren grow up, too.” His calm yet warm outlook on life moved many people.

Recognized for his contributions to the acting field, he received the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1991. Then in 2022, he was finally knighted and became “Sir Sam Neill.” The screen hero who had given humankind adventure and emotion through more than 150 works over 50 years finally entered eternal rest on the land he loved.
