Jang Hang-jun Says His Next Work Will Be Contemporary Drama—Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon-ho Will Meet in Jecheon This September

“Jang Hang-jun” as he previews that his next project will be a contemporary drama, the Jecheon International Music & Film Festival launching in September will host a historic get-together between Korea’s film maestros “Park Chan-wook” and “Bong Joon-ho”.

Director Jang, at a press conference for the Jecheon International Music & Film Festival held on the 30th at the Jecheon City Hall in North Chungcheong Province, laid out his plans for his next project. He said, “I’ve been focusing on period dramas so far, and I want to show a contemporary piece first.” He then referenced the vigorous volunteer militia activities in the Jecheon region, adding, “After I complete the contemporary work, I will collect relevant historical materials and review them in depth as a future project.” The comments pointed to new creative possibilities tied to local history.

He also took a firm stance on his future in the role of executive chairman, which he has led for the past two years. On whether he would seek reappointment, he said, “The discussion is positive, but it’s too early for a definite answer.” Still, he added, “I won’t respond to love calls from other festivals, such as Bucheon, Jeonju, or Busan. My seat is only in Jecheon,” underscoring his deep affection for the festival and his steadfast commitment.

The upcoming September festival is expected to be upgraded into an unprecedented cinematic celebration. At the opening ceremony, “Park Chan-wook” will attend in person to light up the event. Jang said, “It’s a rare moment in film history for the two masters, “Park Chan-wook” and “Bong Joon-ho”, to gather in the same space,” and unveiled the opening of a sweeping celebration that will electrify film and music fans around the world.

This year’s festival strengthened its substance through a variety of programming that reexamines the footsteps of the masters. Unseen still photo exhibitions of “Snowpiercer” and “Oldboy”, landmark works in Korean cinema, will be unveiled for the first time. In addition, a master class featuring top-tier production staff—including “Ryu Seong-hee”, the production designer, and “Jeong Seo-kyeong”, the writer of “Decision to Leave”—is set to be held, creating an academic and artistic exchange venue that will explore the essence of film art in depth.
